The Oak Ridges MoraineThe Oak Ridges Moraine is one of Ontario's most complex and largest glacial remnants. It is one of the most important geographic features in Southern Ontario, performing significant natural functions. In total, the Moraine is 160 kilometres in length from the Niagara Escarpment to Trenton and varies in width from three to 23 kilometres. It is the drainage divide between Lake Ontario to the south and Lakes Scugog and Simcoe and various Kawartha lakes in the north. The Moraine is a critical headwater ecosystem, home to the headwaters of more than 65 rivers and streams. It is characterized by rolling hills, scenic landscapes and habitats including wetlands, forested areas and kettle lakes. The Oak Ridges Moraine accommodates a variety of land uses ranging from greenspace and agriculture to urban development and aggregate extraction. The proximity of the Oak Ridges Moraine to the rapidly expanding Greater Toronto Area, stretching about 90 kilometres through the Regions of Peel, York and Durham, has meant that there is immense development pressure. While recent provincial legislative changes have done a great deal to protect the Moraine, it is essential that all of us continue our efforts to restore, enhance and secure the Oak Ridges Moraine for future generations.
